NARA THAI CUISINE
— CHIANG MAI, THAILAND
Nara Thai Cuisine in Chiang Mai is the first restaurant of this famous Thai Restaurant brand in Northern Thailand. It is located in One Nimman, a vibrant district of Chiang Mai, the historic capital of the ancient Lanna Kingdom. The owners of the facility asked VIRTUARCH to take care of the restauration of the existing wooden building that highlights an over 100-year-old Lanna style roof that has been relocated. VIRTUARCH has also taken over the entire project management. The restaurant comprises three dining zones, a terrace and a separate kitchen building.
The Traditional Lanna Thai Style
To do the restauration in an authentic style one has to know about the Lanna Thai houses. Lanna architecture designs are traditional, taking into account local factors, for example the climate and naturally available materials that can resist the rains, but also provide a cool environment in this tropical environment. Also, the building of the Nara Cuisine consists of wood with a simple, relaxed, and open look and feel.
Highlighting the Roof
Landmark of the restaurant is the Lanna style roof. It is the first thing visitors see and it shapes the whole building. In order to raise the outstanding position of this architectural part in particular, the roof covering tiles have partially been covered by gradient gold-leaf like shingle roof to give it a lighter look. A specially developed lighting concept enhances the embellishment effect during evening and nighttime.
Tradition and Comfort
The request of the owners was to respect the tradition on the one hand while bringing in a modern dining experience on the other hand. Guests should enjoy the typical simple, yet harmonious atmosphere of traditional houses without missing the comfort of a high-class restaurant. The renovation of the entire precious teak wood interior finishing as well as the exterior cladding had to be done cautiously. The decoration was kept in the typical Northern Thai style with many indigenous elements of handcraftsmanship.
A Special Dining Experience
The Nara Thai Cuisine Restaurant project comprises different areas that had to be taken care of. The kitchen is located in an adjacent building. The dining area consists of three zones: There is a generous space for all the guest to eat and relax along the bay window with a city view on Rimcome Junction, a famous spot in Chiang Mai. In the middle of this space a VIP room is integrated with places for around 20 people. To keep the privacy as well as guaranteeing flexibility, foldable glass doors that can be completely opened in order to use the space for regular guests, when privacy is not required. The bar zone complements the dining room. Street food carts are used as decorative elements bringing in the charm of the typical Thai street food stands you can find everywhere in Thailand.
